RIP Chris Wheeler, a highly respected kayaker and instructor

Chris WheelerEven though I never met him personally, I’m still shaken up over the recent death of fellow kayak instructor, Chris Wheeler from the UK.

Chris died this past weekend while paddling on Dartmoor spot near Poundsgate. According to reports he somehow got caught on a strainer after capsizing in the rough water.

Two other paddlers were treated at the scene for hypothermia after being in the water for several hours trying to extract him and keep him upright at the same time.

Mr. Wheeler, was a veteran kayaker with 25 years experience and a regular contributor to the Canoe and Kayak UK magazine. He had paddled in locations all around the world including India, the US, Norway, Costa Rica, India, Bolivia and Vietnam.

He also worked for Pesda Press as the editor for the South East section of the book English White Water.
