US Coast Guard LogoIt’s super late notice as I just found out just now. If you are living near Galilee, Rhode Island, tomorrow morning (June 5) at 10:00am, the US Coast Guard is putting on a search and rescue demonstration as well as putting on a canoe and kayak safety overview.

In 2008, Rhode Island had 55 recreational boater fatalities with 14 of them being paddlers (4 kayak and 10 canoe). That accounted for 25% of the total deaths.

"As the temperatures continue to climb, we're seeing a substantial increase in the number of paddlers on the water," said Chief Petty Officer Patrick Foley, Station Point Judith's executive petty officer. "We encourage people to go out and enjoy their time on the water, but it's imperative that they take a step back and ensure they've taken all the necessary safety precautions before they head out."

The rescue demo and safety presentation takes place at USCG Point Judith boat house at 10:00am.
