Point 65 - Martini

Swedish Kayak Manufacturer, Point 65 Kayaks just sent me photos of a brand new kayak they will be unveiling at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City next week.

Point 65 - MartiniThe Martini is a rotomolded plastic sea kayak that is a short 9 feet 4 inches long. It wouldn’t be the fastest boat on the water but what makes it unique is that it’s modular and designed to break apart into two sections. Each section is only 4’8” long so its small enough to fit into the trunk of your car (or at least the back seat).

They also available is an additional midsection that can be dropped in quickly transform it into a 13’8” tandem kayak.

I love the description that came in the press release:
[blockquote]The Martini is a rigid high-performance day touring kayak that you can lift with a smile on your face, haul in the trunk of your car, fit in the elevator and stow under your bed.[/blockquote]As somebody who lives in an apartment building with very limited space, having two 5’ long sections to store is honestly much more appealing then one boat that sixteen feet long.

The Martini comes with the standard features of any recreational kayak including two watertight hatches, ergonomically designed seat and seat pad, cup holders and built-in carrying handles.

The only major feature that it doesn’t seem to have is parameter or rescue lines. If I found myself floating in the water waiting for a rescue, I believe it would be difficult to hold-on to the boat without them. Keep in mind that this is still a pre-production model so the final version could have them included.

Look for Point 65 Kayak Martini to be available in Spring, 2011.

Finally, if you are planning to attend the OR show next week make sure you attend their demo day. Point 65 is planning on connecting a whole bunch of their similarly designed Tequila sit-on-tops to create 9 paddler, 41 foot kayaking machine. Now I would like to see photos of that monster on the water!
