Famed paddler Don Starkell injured in house fire

According to news reports famed long distance paddler, Don Starkell was badly hurt when a fire broke out at his home in East Kildonan, Manitoba yesterday morning (March 24).

Paddle to the Amazon Book CoverIt’s not known at this time what caused the fire but the news report did say that fire crews had a hard time getting into the house due to it being crammed with belongings.

He is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

When I was 14 I read his book, Paddle to the Amazon and can still remember how much it changed my outlook on life. It’s the story of his two year adventure (understatement) paddling from Winnipeg to Brazil. If you haven’t read it, you absolutely must.

He is also famous for his attempt to paddle the Northwest Passage by kayak in one season. It’s a sad story (for many reasons) as he had to be rescued just a couple of days before completion. In that process he lost a couple of fingers and toes to frostbite.
