Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association LogoThe Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) has announced on December 31 a new Kayaking Program for Ontario Instructors. The Program as announced to ORCKA Members is being finalized for use in 2008 but the preview below has been sent to members and others to assist in their planning for the paddling season.

ORCKA is committed to offering its members canoeing and kayaking programs. ORCKA's Canoeing program has been developed over 25 years and is well respected inside and outside Ontario. ORCKA initially offered the Paddle Canada Kayaking Program to its members and is now unable to continue to do so. For 2008, ORCKA will have a new kayaking program offering that will provide Ontario paddlers, Organizational Members and Kayak Instructors with an exciting new kayak program:
  • Members: you will have ORCKA's new Kayaking programs, courses and certifications to participate in through ORCKA in the 2008 season! A full range of flatwater kayaking, coastal kayaking, moving water kayaking and kayak tripping programs will be available
  • Organizational Members: You will have ORCKA's new Kayaking programs and certifications to offer participants through ORCKA for the 2008 paddling season! A full range of flatwater kayaking, coastal kayaking, moving water kayaking and kayak tripping programs will be available for you to offer. As well, the ORCKA Canoeing Program is also available
  • Kayak Instructors: Your existing Kayaking Instruction certifications can be grandfathered into ORCKA's new Kayak offerings. You will have Kayaking programs, courses and certifications to instruct through your ORCKA Organizational Member for the 2008 paddling season! A full range of flatwater kayaking, coastal kayaking, moving water kayaking and kayak tripping programs will be available for you

The following disciplines will be available in the new ORCKA Kayaking Program:
  • Safe Kayaking Program (abridged) - a two hour introduction to kayaking
  • Flatwater Kayaking - an introduction to kayaking in sheltered waters
  • Coastal Kayaking - kayaking day trips in coastal conditions
  • Moving Water Kayaking - kayaking in moving water and rapids
  • Kayak Tripping - multi-day kayaking trips

Coastal Kayaking is really furthering the progression of kayaking skills with more difficult water conditions (sea states and coastlines) and more expertise in the paddling and rescue skills. The Coastal Kayaking Level 2 will actually be a Day Trip Leader who needs good paddling skills and enough leadership and group awareness skills for day trips which are very common with kayakers. The Kayak Tripping discipline is for overnight kayak trips at the trip participant and leader levels. More risk management and camping skills are included. Coastal Kayaking is a pre-requisite which provides the paddling skill component for the Kayak Tripping Level 2.

Skill levels to be offered are:
  • Safe Kayaking Program (abridged)
  • Flatwater Kayaking
  • Flatwater Kayaking A
  • Flatwater Kayaking B
  • Coastal Kayaking Level 1
  • Coastal Kayaking Level 2 (Day Trip Leader)
  • Moving Water Kayaking Level 1
  • Moving Water Kayaking Level 2
  • Kayak Tripping Level 1 (Trip Participant)
  • Kayak Tripping Level 2 (Multi-day Trip Leader)

The following Instructor levels will be available:
  • Camp Kayaking Instructor (for OCA Camps)
  • Flatwater Kayaking Instructor
  • Coastal Kayaking Instructor 1
  • Coastal Kayaking Instructor 2
  • Moving Water Kayaking Instructor 1
  • Moving Water Kayaking Instructor 2
  • Kayak Tripping Instructor 2

Existing ORCKA Kayaking Instructors will be grandfathered into ORCKA's new Kayak Instructor system. The Kayaking course participant fees will be similar to the existing ORCKA Canoeing fees. An ORCKA Kayaking Program manual and other supporting documents will be available before the paddling season.

ORCKA will continue to provide additional information to ORCKA's Organizational Members and Kayaking Instructors. More details will be released in the upcoming weeks.
