Kayaks 4 Kidz™, one of LA’s most unique summer youth water sports programs, joins Tavis Smiley’s Road to Health multi-city tour as it rolls into Los Angeles. Kayaks 4 Kidz™ will bring the beach to the LA Convention Center March 30-31 in an interactive exhibit which will share the fitness benefits of kayaking as a way for families to stay healthy while sharing a fun outdoor adventure together. During the 2-day Road to Health Expo, Kayaks 4 Kidz™ will present workshops on water safety, proper gear and equipment and live paddling technique demonstrations.

Now in its third year, more than 300 students have graduated from the Kayaks 4 Kidz™ free summer classes in kayak paddling techniques, water safety skills and recreational boating rules, becoming a popular event at Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey Lagoon. “Exercise doesn't have to be a dirty word - but, it's got to be fun to keep youngsters motivated. Kayaking is a fun, healthy and challenging strength and confidence-building experience for kids,” says Frankie Smith, and Gay Brewer, Directors of Kayaks 4 Kidz™.

Kayaks 4 Kidz™ and the Road to Health tour share the belief that physical fitness and proper eating habits are the key to a healthy lifestyle at any age! We must all take an active role in making sure that our children are fit and healthy physically as well as mentally so they can operate at their full potential as they grow into adults. “This tour was created for communities of color to address health from a cultural perspective and to show that simple changes in diet and lifestyle can lead to a healthier life,” said Tavis Smiley.

The Road to Health tour, sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, is a two-day, multi-city health, fitness, and wellness expo featuring local and national celebrities, seminars for youth, men and women, dance and nutrition demonstrations, medical screenings, CPR certification training and a blood drive, cardio zone for kids, and a ¼ mile walk-a-thon.

The first day of the expo is aimed at youth, ages 11–15, and will feature a variety of fitness demonstrations, meal and snack selection, seminars to build self-esteem, and activities designed to show how exercise can be fun. The activities will include a kids’ cardio zone featuring rock climbing, tennis, golf, boxing and interactive exercise video games including McDonald’s popular mini playground—“Passport to Play” with activities led by an American Olympian. Nutritionists and fitness experts along with health conscious celebrities, will share their knowledge on how they make healthier life style choices every day.

The second day focuses on family health and fitness and is targeted towards African American and Hispanic adults, ages 18–65. Featured seminar topics include HIV/AIDS, diabetes, exercise, diet and nutrition, senior health, and prenatal care. Taking a holistic approach to family wellness, Road to Health offers seminars and exhibits tailored to natural and alternative approaches to healing the mind and body, and introduce new ways to use food for nutritional and medicinal purposes. Several workshops will feature Spanish-speaking instructors along with Spanish language materials. Tavis Smiley will lead a walk-a-thon on Saturday.

Road to Health is presented by Kaiser Permanente and supported by national partnerships with the American Red Cross, Action for Healthy Kids, McDonald’s, Department of Minority Health, Baltimore City Health Fair and media sponsor “The Tom Joyner Morning Show”. In each city, the “Eliminating Childhood Obesity” symposiums are sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Kayaks 4 Kidz™ is a self-funded, non-profit program offered as a free community service to kids between the ages of 8-15. The program’s mission is to encourage kids to stay active, get lots of exercise, increase cardio fitness performance levels and develop a greater appreciation and respect for the environment, themselves and their community. The program offers free Introduction to Kayaking classes from June through September at Marina del Rey, CA.
