Coleman Exponent Logo Three new basecamping tents - with design features, materials and other elements usually found in premium backpacking tents - join the Coleman® Exponent® lineup in 2008. Known as the Northstar Series, the new trio is designed to meet the needs of serious outdoor enthusiasts who want premium tents in a modern, roomy cabin style.

Each tent features four doors with mesh panels for ventilation options. The interior roof is an expansive mesh area but zippered fabric panels in the sleeping quarters provide outstanding ventilation control. And, borrowing a page from the backpack tent-makers' design files, two vestibules for gear storage have been added to this cabin floor plan. A full coverage rainfly with taped seams ensures weather protection yet provides configuration options that let campers have door awnings, extra ventilation or auxiliary dry-entry vestibule spaces.

Three sizes are offered. The Northstar X4 tent is 12 x 7 feet with 120 square feet, a 6-foot peak roof height and four-person sleeping capacity. The Northstar X6 tent, with a six-person sleeping capacity, is 14 x 8 feet with 154 square feet and a center height of 6-foot-2 (74 inches). And the eight-person Northstar X8 model is 15 x 10 feet with 206 square feet and a roof height of 6-foot-4.

Premium 6061 T6 series aluminum poles are lightweight and convenient yet provide excellent structural strength for withstanding wind and rain storms. The poles feature variable tension with color-coding to simplify setup and are field repairable. Quick-clips that attach the tent to the frame poles add simplification to the process. The space created between tent fabric and frame structure also allows excellent ventilation between the tent and rainfly.

All three models feature a screen room at one end of the tent. A clear window in the fly matches a zippered mesh window in the tent for adding sunlight and views to the surrounding landscape. Two additional poles are included with each tent to erect a side awning above a door on either side of the tent.

Suggested retail prices range from $499 to $599. The Northstar Series tents will be available from specialty outdoor retailers nationwide. (See specification charts below for fabric and other materials information.)

  • Weight Reduction Most Notable Improvement in Backpacking Models
Several improvements are being implemented to the Coleman Exponent line of seven backpacking tents, but the most notable and welcome across-the-board tweaking is to accomplish weight reduction, says Trevor Hinz, product manager. "We are doing some other things to improve consumer convenience and help retail sales staff access model information, but the biggest news is reducing packed weight and reducing the minimum trail weight of all our tents and stating those weights using standard test methods," Hinz said. "We were hurting ourselves in head-to-head comparisons of weight because of the way we were stating weights. Now we'll be consistent with most other brands, and we stack up more favorably ... and fairly." Minimum trail weight (also known as minimum weight) in the charts below, as defined by standard testing methods for a backpacking tent, is the combined weight of the tent body, fly and tent poles. The pack weight is the tent's packaged weight as it is for sale to a customer, including not only the tent body, fly and poles, but also seam sealers, guy lines, instructions, tent stakes, stuff sack and other items that may be in the package.
