Sea Kayak HandlingI just got a note from Pesda Press announcing a new kayaking skills book coming out March 28, 2009.

Written by BCU Level 5 coach, Doug Cooper, it's described as a practical guide that will help the reader to master the skills needed to manoeuvre a sea kayak efficiently. The book is recommended for beginner and intermediate paddlers.

The book covers the foundation skills of posture, power transfer and learning to feel how the boat responds. It also covers all the classic sea kayaking stokes and manoeuvres.

For those who remember that name but can't put a finger on it, Simon Willis has interviewed Doug several times on various topics. You can find them in the podcast library at seakayakroutes.com.

One of their recent conversations revolved around how to prepare for the BCU 5 star award. That conversation happened when I wrote to Simon to see if he could track somebody down for me who could separate fact from fiction for that course. He confirmed for me that you DO NOT need to have a helicopter license as another (misinformed) instructor once told me.

I'm looking forward to seeing the book when it comes out in print.
